Cap Karoso in Detail
Your Yoga & Wellness Resort
Discover Cap Karoso, voted the best resort in Indonesia by the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, a luxury sanctuary on Sumba. Located directly on the coral reef and surrounded by pristine beaches, it serves as the perfect base to explore the island's natural beauty and authentic culture. In the secluded Kodi region, modern, nature-inspired architecture and the spiritual traditions of the Ratos, the local shamans, blend into a harmonious atmosphere.
Cap Karoso combines traditional Sumbanese craftsmanship, contemporary art, and modern design for a unique experience. Guests enjoy creative cuisine at the Beach Club, fine dining at the Julang Restaurant, as well as yoga, meditation, and wellness rituals with natural ingredients. A place where nature, culture, and pleasure converge for an unforgettable stay.
Location & Surroundings
Sumba, a gem in the Indonesian archipelago, captivates with its pristine natural diversity: gentle hills, expansive savannahs, dense forests, and spectacular coastlines shape the landscape. The untouched beaches with crystal-clear water are particularly impressive. Traditional villages with roofs soaring up to 25 meters and megalithic tombs from the Bronze Age offer fascinating insights into centuries-old cultures. The island is perfect for adventurers and culture enthusiasts eager to experience authentic Indonesia away from mass tourism. Conveniently, Sumba can be easily combined with a stay in Bali. Tambolaka Airport is just about an hour's flight from Denpasar.
Dining & Leisure
The culinary heart of Cap Karoso is its own organic farm, where nearly all fruits and vegetables for the restaurants and bars are grown across three hectares - from tomatoes and cabbage to juicy mangoes. It doesn't get fresher than farm-to-table on Sumba.
Under the leadership of Chef Antoine LeVacon, the Beach Club serves creative dishes made from daily fresh ingredients in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether it's perfectly grilled fish or handmade pasta to share, enjoyment and sociability are central, without compromising on quiet, individual moments.
At Julang Restaurant, fine dining meets a welcoming, intimate atmosphere. International guest chefs, including Michelin-starred chefs from France, regularly take over the kitchen, transforming products from the organic farm into extraordinary menus with a personal touch. The daily Chef's Table experience offers special insights into the art of gastronomy.
The experience is completed by the Apcine Bar, where flawless drinks and Indo-Basque finger food are served - perfect for relaxing with a view of the horizon. Guests with half board or full board enjoy an evening 3-course menu including non-alcoholic beverages; full board additionally includes lunch.
Malala Spa
Immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of a traditional Sumbanese house and experience spa rituals based on ancient shamanic healing techniques. Exclusive signature treatments including full-body massages, exfoliations, masks, and luxurious baths will deeply relax you. A special highlight is the Healing Ritual inspired by the Marapu religion, utilizing botanical treasures such as turmeric, noni, and white sandalwood oil. Alongside nature-inspired massages, classic treatments, exfoliations, wraps, facial treatments, and care for hands, feet, and hair are also available - all using high-quality, natural ingredients like hibiscus, island herbs, and sea salt.
For families, there are lovingly designed parent-child treatments that offer shared moments of well-being. The offerings are complemented by a modern gym for those looking to enhance their vitality.
Yoga, Meditation & Mindfulness
Take time at the beach, on the cliffs, or in the yoga pavilion to align your body and mind. Yoga and meditation classes are offered twice daily (6 days a week, morning & afternoon), suitable for all levels. Absorb the restorative energy of Sumba to achieve a sense of freedom and tranquility. A hike here presents the perfect opportunity for a mindfulness session. Surround yourself with the island's quiet yet ever-changing landscape. Let the gentle ocean breeze awaken your senses and the power of nature strengthen your inner balance. Experience the profound harmony between your soul and Sumba's lush surroundings.
Free Time

Textiles, Sustainability & Agriculture
Textiles from Sumba
The textiles of Sumba are a cultural heritage through which the current generation passes messages to the future. Each piece follows complex patterns and reflects the identity of the weavers and their communities. The natural colours are derived from noni roots, wood fibres, or mud. The production process can take years and involves numerous traditional steps. Internationally, Sumbanese fabrics are recognized as outstanding textile designs and are featured in renowned museums. Cap Karoso consciously uses locally made textiles, supporting the island community.
Sustainability
Sumba, especially the coastal region around the resort, has a delicate ecosystem consisting of farmland, forests, coastal areas, and coral reefs. Cap Karoso was designed with utmost care to protect this environment. This includes choosing water-saving landscape plants, an eco-friendly water treatment system, and using energy from a local solar park that covers about half of the resort's needs. Additionally, the resort avoids plastic packaging and reduces food waste by utilizing its own livestock.
Agriculture
What was once rocky soil has been transformed into fertile organic gardens through mulching, composting, and sustainable water management. The natural fertilizer from the buffalo, crucial for Sumba, enriches the soil and enables the cultivation of new ingredients like salads and tomatoes, previously scarce on the island. The selected plants are ideally suited to the local climate and ecosystem.
To strengthen the community, the farm offers training in landscape design and agriculture. Locals learn plant propagation, ecological farming methods, permaculture, and basic safety and health topics - knowledge they can directly apply to their own land.
